How to Clean an Air Fryer (Schedule and Safe Methods)

How to clean an air fryer: a daily, weekly and monthly schedule, dishwasher-safe parts, baked-on grease fixes, element care and odour removal.

Most air fryers die early for one of two reasons: the basket coating gives up, or grease bakes onto the element and starts to smoke. Both are preventable, and both are cleaning problems.

An air fryer is easy to clean if you do it often. The two mistakes people make — soaking the whole appliance and scrubbing with abrasive pads — are exactly the ones that cause damage.

Cleaning guidance varies by appliance model — read your manual before you soak, scrub or dishwasher anything. Wattage and basket size have nothing to do with cleaning, but the finish on your basket decides everything.

Daily, weekly and monthly

Daily is the basket and the drawer. Weekly is the element, the guard and the outer shell. Monthly is the deep clean and an inspection. Do the daily job while the unit is still slightly warm, not hot and not cold, because warm grease wipes away and cold grease has to be chipped.

If you cook greasy food often, treat the weekly row as every two or three uses. A basket of chicken wings leaves far more residue than a basket of toast.

What is dishwasher-safe, and what is not

This is the question with the most wrong answers online, because it depends on your model. There is no universal rule.

Baked-on grease: two methods that work

Baked-on grease is carbonised oil. You cannot wipe it off, and scrubbing it off takes the coating with it. You have to soften it first.

Baking soda paste. Mix three parts baking soda with one part warm water into a paste. Spread it over the stained area, leave it for 15–30 min, then wipe with a soft sponge and warm water. For a stubborn ring, leave it longer rather than pressing harder. Baking soda is a mild abrasive, so use light pressure.

Vinegar steam. Put a bowl of equal parts white vinegar and water in the basket, then run the air fryer at 350°F / 177°C for 8–10 min. The steam loosens the residue on the basket walls. Let everything cool, pour the bowl out, and wipe with a soft sponge. Do not let the bowl run dry, and do not use this method on a unit whose manual warns against heating liquid in the basket.

If neither method moves the stain, stop. A dark, smooth, seasoned patch that does not smell when you heat the unit is cosmetic, not dirty. Chipping at it costs you the non-stick finish, which is a much bigger problem than a stain.

Cleaning the heating element safely

Most air fryers do not have a removable coil. The element sits at the top, above the basket, often behind a metal guard. You clean it in place, and you never submerge it.

  1. Unplug the unit. Not off, unplugged. This is the step people skip.
  2. Let it cool completely. A cool element cannot burn you and clean grease releases better than hot grease.
  3. Turn the unit upside down if the design allows it. On many models the exposed element faces you once the basket is out and the unit is inverted. Check your manual first.
  4. Brush it dry. A soft pastry brush or a dry toothbrush lifts crumbs and flakes off the coil without touching it.
  5. Wipe with a barely damp cloth. Damp, not wet. Clean the coil and the surrounding metal, then dry it immediately.
  6. Never pour or spray water into the cavity. Liquid that reaches the wiring is the single most common way people destroy an air fryer.

If grease is truly baked onto the element and smoking, use a baking soda paste on a cool unit, apply it with a cloth rather than your fingers, leave it 15 min, wipe it off and dry the coil. If the buildup will not come off, and the unit smokes on every use, contact the manufacturer rather than scraping.

Non-stick care rules for the basket

The coating is the part that decides how long the appliance lasts. Four rules cover it.

Wash coated parts with a soft sponge and dish soap. If food is stuck, soak in warm soapy water for 10–15 min rather than scraping. If the coating is already flaking into your food, replace the basket or the unit. Flaked coating is not something to cook around.

Odour removal

An air fryer that smells of last week's fish will flavour tonight's dessert. The fix is removal, not covering it up.

What voids a warranty

Warranty terms differ by brand. These actions most commonly void coverage — check your manual, because the exact list is model-specific.

Keep the receipt and photograph the rating label on the bottom of the unit. Both make a claim much faster.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my air fryer? The basket after every use, the element and guard weekly, and a full deep clean monthly. Cook greasy food often and you should do the weekly job every two or three uses.

Can I put the air fryer basket in the dishwasher? Only if your manual lists it as dishwasher-safe, and usually only on the top rack. If the manual does not say, hand wash it.

How do I get baked-on grease off an air fryer? Soften it first with a baking soda paste for 15–30 min or a vinegar steam run at 350°F / 177°C for 8–10 min, then wipe with a soft sponge. Do not scrape it.

The short version

Clean the basket daily, the element weekly and the whole unit monthly. Use warm water, dish soap and a soft sponge, and let baking soda or vinegar steam do the work on baked-on grease. Never submerge the main unit, never use metal on the coating, and check your manual before dishwashing anything. Five minutes a week is cheaper than a replacement.
